Beekeeper Creates Buzz

MMK was treated to a visit from Mr Shenker, a local beekeeper. He explained that in each colony, there is a queen bee, around 400 drones (male bees) and approximately 40,000 female worker bees. Mr Shenker taught the children that the female bees do all the work. When the queen bee lays eggs, she produces a pheromone that makes all the bees celebrate.

Mr Shenker was dressed in his beekeeper outfit and the children were interested to hear why he had to wear it when working with the bees. He explained the process of wax production and honey production and each child was able to try some of the pure, non-heat treated honey from his collection.

Thank you to the PTA for sponsoring this event.
